JACKASSERY:
First of all, thank you for supporting live stand-up comedy. Our boys here and on stages around the world are out there sacrificing themselves just so we can laugh and have a good time.. and I know they appreciate your support. Whether or not we agree with the drink minimum, the important thing is to support our comics as they leave their friends and families behind to bravely do their jobs.
COMEDY NEWS HEADLINES:
It’s the end of January already and this is the first N’Sup email update of 2006.. well, since November 2005, actually. Before you go mouthin’ off about how we’re all slackers or whatever, keep in mind this “News” section on the site IS updated as news breaks. Some semi-recent stories that are still archived here include:
– “Last Comic Standing” Returns
– R.I.P.: Richard Pryor
– Chappelle’s Show Returns: Comedy Central to air never-before-seen 3rd season sketches
– David Cross: An Open Letter To Larry The Cable Guy
– Patton Oswalt Interview On AST
– Pat Dixon on the Late, Late Show
– Interview: Wix Wichmann
– Mitch Hedberg Tribute show on Sirius
As Killer Beaz’ librarian sister would say, “Read up!”
PODCAST INFO:
That Patton Oswalt interview on AST is really, really good. Know what else was good? The Patton Oswalt interview we did live on the NashvilleStandUp.com Radio Show / Podcast / Extravaganza Of The Stars / Showcase Showdown / Hoedown / Hootie-Hoo / Webcast Thingie. Did you know N’Sup does a weekly podcast? Wait, do we? Well.. we DID have a weekly podcast, but then we took a few weeks off for the holidays.. and then we took off a month to recover from
New Years.. but WE’RE BACK, BABY! We’re recording a new episode Saturday and will have it up online as soon as we sober up enough to post it. For more info about that show, visit the site:
www.NashvilleStandUp.com/radio/
While I’m on the subject of podcasts, you should know that there’s another one produced by Nashville-based comedians. The Happy For Apathy podcast by Manundso and T-Diddy is hilarious and very well produced. You can actually HEAR them when they talk, which is kinda cool. I asked them what their technique was and they told me their secret: they use microphones. Amazing! For the podcast link and info and stuff, go to their site:

COOL, UPCOMING SHOWS:
Sarah Silverman: Jesus Is Magic
The Belcourt is my favorite theater. Not just because of this.. but because they always do cool stuff like this. They’re showing comedian Sarah Silverman’s stand-up / sketch / musical film, “Jesus Is Magic” which was based on her incredible off-Broadway show. Silverman is cute and smart and funny and female.. and let’s face it, you don’t always have all four of those in one package. You’ve seen her in “School Of Rock”, “Jimmy Kimmel Live”, “Crank Yankers”, “The Larry Sanders Show” and “Mr. Show with Bob and David” and “Saturday Night Live”.. and if you haven’t seen her on any of those shows, just go ahead and jump on the bandwagon right now anyway. Pretend you’ve loved her forever and go get all those dvd’s and do your remedial comedy homework and catch up.. but in the mean time, go see this film and see why most comics would drool and stammer like an idiot if they got to meet this hilarious woman.
My suggestion? Go TONIGHT, Friday, Jan. 27th @ 7:30pm – Their opening night event includes a pre-film stand-up comedy show with Chris Crofton & Eric Williams performing. Chris Crofton performs music in “The Alcohol Stunt Band” and sometimes as “The Alcohol Stunt Man” and he’s been doing stand-up sets around town for a while, too. VERY funny dude. He’s unconventional, unpredictable and unforgettable.. and as many times as I’ve seen him, he always has something new and unique for each performance. Eric Williams hasn’t been doing comedy quite as long, but has really jumped right in head first and already has people talking. Go check them out. Tickets are just $8.75 for the opening night event.. and you’ll get to see those guys do live comedy and then the Silverman film in a beautiful historic theater. There ya go.. now you’ve got plans for tonight. You’re welcome.

Keith Alberstadt @ Zanies
If you live in Nashville and enjoy comedy, you already know Keith. As a Vanderbilt student, he was on the student radio station and doing local shows at Zanies and around town.. and since then he done growed up and moved out and has been on the road doing comedy full time. He’s been on the “Bob and Tom” and “John Boy and Billy” Radio Shows; a semifinalist at the Boston Comedy Festival; a regional finalist for “Last Comic Standing” and is on XM and Sirius Satellite Radio’s comedy channels PLUS he regularly entertains U.S. Troops around the world, having recently been to Germany and Iraq.
Keith is animated, prolific, and one of the funniest people I know, on stage and off. He’s a seasoned performer and a great guy.. plus, he’s single ladies! Go check him out at Zanies. He’s there as the middle act for James Gregory all week.. but I’d suggest going to the late show Saturday night. James has to go to bed early, so Keith will be the headliner. It’s always cool to see a hometown hero like Keith get to headline his home club.. and if you really want to see just how good Nashville comedians are, go see Keith. Featuring for him will be another Nashville based comic named Chad Riden. Martin Brady of the Nashville Scene wrote, “One of Nashville’s staunchest promoters of comedy, Riden is also a pretty funny guy in his own right. His aggressive, angry-young-man stance of a few years ago has been leavened somewhat, since Riden more recently entered the world of marriage and fatherhood. His observations on the domestic sphere teeter amiably on the edge, but when he wants to, Riden can still zing pop culture, the media and American life in general with incisive wit.” Personally, I don’t like him at all.. but to each his own, I guess!
Keith Alberstadt & James Gregory @ Zanies:
Friday, 1/27 @ 8:00, 10:15
Saturday, 1/28 @ 7:00, 9:00
Sunday, 1/29 @ 8:00
Chad Riden & Keith Alberstadt @ Zanies:
Saturday, 1/28 @ 11:15 (LATE SHOW)
BTW, next week at Zanies is: Greg Giraldo, Mike Speanburg and Nashville’s own Jesse Perry (of www.MangyDog.com) – the Tennessean called Jesse an “improvisational genius”.. and trust me.. they REALLY did their research on that one. He is very funny and you should definitely go see that show.
Funny Sundays: Just Will, Kay Jay, Renard Hirsch @ Comedy Cafe
These guys just did a big show at the Belcourt in tribute to Richard Pryor.. and if you missed that, you can still see their show every other Sunday at:
Dumas Walker’s Comedy Cafe, 1402 Artic Ave., Nashville, TN 37207
It’s just a $5 admission with a 2 drink minimum.. I’m told there are great combo meals under $6 and.. AND.. the 1st 20 people in get FREE BEER!
Their next show is this Sunday, the 29th. Doors open at 7:00 and the show will start at 8:30 no matter what! So be there or miss out on some good comedy.
