Scot Nery

Scot NeryComedian / pancake juggler / contortionist Scot Nery called Nashville home 1998-1999 & 2001-2002. While here, Scot hosted the Tuesday night open mic at Bar Car for a while and toured with Brooks & Dunn’s “Neon Circus.” He has since moved to San Francisco and now lives in Los Angeles. He once did a trick on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, and has appeared on various other tv projects.. memorably in the DIY Network’s Nailed at Nine hammer juggling promo and as “Mama” in Scary Movie 5. In case you’ve never seen his stage show or street performances, they’re pretty spectacular. NOBODY else does what Scot does. Here’s a video he uploaded yesterday:

Mr. Nery is back in town this week for a FREE show Saturday at Centennial Park: the New Belgium Tour de Fat – A Ballyhoo of Bikes and Beer. The whole things runs from 11am to 5pm, but Scot’s show starts at noon. Don’t miss it. Here’s the Facebook event.

Chad Riden appears on The Daily Show – June 5, 2013

Chad Riden on The Daily Show

The Daily Show visited Nashville again on May 16, 2013 to shoot a story about how Tennessee’s governor has rejected Obama’s Medicaid expansion money in favor of a wacky health care lottery designed to fail. Correspondent Jessica Williams interviewed three Nashvillians and shot a sketch in which Nashville’s own Chad Riden appeared as a Publisher’s Clearing House prize patrol guy.

Comedy Central aired the edited piece on June 5, 2013, titled “Care Bearers: Jessica Williams investigates America’s “health belt” and its rejection of expanded Medicaid coverage.” Here’s the video:

Here are some still photos from the video:

Rory Scovel Live at Third Man Records – June 22, 2013

Rory Scovel @ Third Man Records 2013.06.22

Rory Scovel @ Third Man Records 2013.06.22

This is just about as sweet as it gets. You’ve seen Rory Scovel on Conan, Comedy Central, The Nerdist, Jimmy Fallon, at Zanies, at Bonnaroo, at Corporate Juggernaut shows and in your dreams.. but now on June 22nd you can see him Live at Third Man Records.

Even if you’ve seen Rory every time he has played here, you still have no idea what to expect, unless you expect to see a brilliantly funny improvisational genius who uses his already excellent prepared material as a loose framework on which he builds a unique one of a kind experience that leaves the audience feeling like they’ve just started to peak on their magic mushroom fueled comedy trip.  He’s one of the most innovative live performers of this generation and if you miss this show for any reason, then you are a fool.

Here’s some clips:

Third Man’s website says, “..Rory Scovel one of our favorite stand-up and improv comics around, will be stopping by Third Man Records on June the 22nd to grace us all with his quick wit and and absurdist perspective. Tickets are available now, so mark your calendars and prepare yourselves, mind, body, and soul for the hilarity that will soon ensue…”

They go on to say, “Tickets are $15 in advance online or in the Third Man store / $20 at the door before the show, if available.” but buy your tickets right now, because this is going to sell out very quickly.

Nashville Scene: “You better open that door before Nashville’s burgeoning comedy scene beats it down”

nashville scene cover May 30, 2013

Cool! The Nashville Scene’s current cover story is an overview of our “scrappy community of local comedians” in Nashville called, “You better open that door before Nashville’s burgeoning comedy scene beats it down.” It’s fantastic. Thanks to Lance Conzett and everybody else involved! Here’s an excerpt:

Once a town that was considered notoriously hard to crack by touring comedians, Music City seems to have developed a sense of humor in recent years — and with it, a legitimate comedy scene. As Zanies celebrates 30 years as a beacon for comedy in the South, a new club downtown is becoming a comedy hub, and a scrappy community of local comedians is on the verge of breaking out.

TN State Senator / National Laughing Stock Stacey Campfield To Debate Comedian J. LaLonde 4/20

2012.04.20 Lalonde - Campfield debate

2012.04.20 Lalonde - Campfield debate

lalonde vs. campfieldKnoxville, TN – Tennessee State Senator Stacey Campfield has agreed to debate Comedian/Radio Host J. LaLonde. The debate takes place at The Square Room in downtown Knoxville, TN on April 20th, 2013. The doors open at 2:30, the debate begins at 3:00 pm. Knox County Mayor Tim Burchett will moderate the debate. The event is free to the public.

You probably remember hearing about Stacey Campfield and his “Don’t Say Gay” legislation (or perhaps some of his more recent misguided nonsense) from the numerous times The Daily Show with Jon Stewart and The Colbert Report have made him (and all of Tennessee by association) a laughing stock. Senator Campfield has previously been a guest on LaLonde’s radio show that aired on 94.3 The X (WNFZ-FM) in East TN. They plan to debate past and current bills proposed by the Senator. The two have been openly negotiating many of the terms via social networks and LaLonde’s blog WORD THUG.

Senator Campfield has held elected office since 2004 when he was elected to the Tennessee House of Representatives. J. LaLonde
released his debut comedy DVD “J. LaLonde Live from The Historic Tennessee Theatre” in 2011.

Here’s a video LaLonde made for kickstarter (note: the event date is incorrect in the video – the correct date is April 20, 2013):
