CNN reports that Dave Chappelle is back.
Imagine this guy’s day to day life. He’s been doing standup since he was a teenager.. has had a dozen production deals in the last few years and one after another, they all fell apart for some reason or another and he finally gets the chance to do HIS show HIS was. It’s instantly a hit, because at this point in his career, his comedic voice is just Dave being Dave.. it’s totally natural and connects with people and is funnier than anything else anywhere. He finally gets the jackpot he deserves and what happens? Comedy Central (or whoever) starts nitpicking on what he wants to do on his show.. so he walks.
Here’s a guy who’s able to step away and hop a plane to Africa to chill out.. and of course, the american media takes this and runs with it as if we’re talking about Mariah Carrey or Anne Heche losing her shit and wandering around like a semi-nude zombie mumbling about flapjacks or some shit. Then, there’s the drug angle. The guy did a movie about pot, and does some drug humor, so he’s gotta be strung out and in rehab, right? Why else would he walk away? He’s gotta be crazy!
So he shows up and does time in LA.. the people lose their minds and he smokes the room, as always. THIS makes headlines? Imagine being in a position where when you walk into a couple of the most well known legendary comedy clubs on the planet, the place goes nuts.. you do an impromptu set and that’s headline news.
Kudos to Dave, man. How many comics can call their own shots and do whatever the fuck they want? I’m tellin’ you, if he is disappointed in the direction his show is going, I’d listen to this guy. Who has the comedic vision here? Some suit at Viacom? Whatever Dave does, I can’t wait to check it out. If he doesn’t ever do another episode of Chapelle’s Show, so be it. I’ve never laughed so hard at any live show.. what a genius.
