Todd Barry: The Final Crowd Work Tour @ The High Watt – 4/6/2014

Todd Barry at The High Watt - 4/6/2014

For far too many stand-up comedians, crowd work is a crutch to lean against when you don’t have material. For far too many audience members, crowd work means a fear that a stand-up comedian will make fun of you.

But it’s something special when Todd Barry does it.

You’ll find out just how special when Todd Barry: The Crowd Work Tour comes out in March. Barry revealed the release date a few days ago, noting that Lance Bangs directed it, and it’ll cost $5. We learned last night that Louis C.K. financed Barry’s special and will release it exclusively online via C.K.’s website at buy.louisck.net.

Barry also talked about his new special in an interview on “The Goddamn Dave Hill Show” on WFMU. “In September I did a Crowd Work tour where I just interacted with the crowd. No jokes. No material. Just kinda walked up there and started… talking to people. You’ve seen comics do crowd work,” Barry told Hill. “I filmed this tour. It was seven cities. Lance Bangs, who you may know, has directed a lot of cool stuff… we had a whole film crew, and we filmed seven shows, starting in San Diego, going up to Anchorage, Alaska.”

The great and wonderful Mary Mack is coming to Nashville to do hilarious comedy with her husband Tim Harmston at The High Watt Monday, February 24th. She is one of the absolute funniest, most original comics to have ever called Nashville home and we are damn lucky she is coming back for one night to do a show here! Don’t miss it.

Mary Mack and her mandolin sing-alongs have been featured on the nationally syndicated Bob and Tom Radio Show, XM, Sirius, and Minnesota’s Polka Spotlight.

She has performed in the Vancouver Comedy Fest (2007), HBO’s Andy Kaufman Awards (2007), Montreal’s Just For Laughs Festival (2009), and in 2011 was selected for the San Francisco Sketch Fest’s “Dozen,” 12 up and coming headliners performing at the Punch Line throughout the fest.

Mack had her national TV debut on Comedy Central’s Live at Gotham and NBC’s Last Comic Standing. She was interviewed on Episode 263 of the WTF with Marc Maron podcast in March 2012. Mary currently provides the voice of “Dylan” on FOX / ADHD’s “Golan the Insatiable” cartoon. She now divides her time among Los Angeles, Minneapolis, and a camper in the woods. She has a couple albums out you can purchase on cdbaby.com or maybe itunes. The world is so complicated.

We’re thrilled to bring Joe DeRosa to town from NYC. He’s an Opie and Anthony regular, and has appeared on both “Louie” and “Bored to Death.” He’s also had his own Comedy Central special, and just recorded his second live album.

DeRosa’s jokes are those of an everyman struggling under an ever-present raincloud. He just wants to be happy; he just wants “to sell for a higher price at the people store.”

The opening comics: Jane Borden, Gary Fletcher, Heather LeRoy, and host Sean Parrott.

Ryan Singer & Jarrod Harris @ The High Watt 1/28

Ryan Singer & Jarrod Harris

Organic is a comedy tour and documentary featuring comedians Jarrod Harris and Ryan Singer traveling around the country in Jarrod’s RV. Over the past few years, vibrant organic comedy scenes have sprung up all around the country and have been the life support system for comedians like Jarrod and Ryan that have one foot in the mainstream rooms and the other firmly planted in the alternative scene. These scenes are all uniquely driven by the love of stand up comedy by the comedians who live there. This tour will showcase the freedom of the art form these venues allow and the people who have unwittingly created a place for comedians to come into their own before breaking through to the next level like Jarrod and Ryan. This will be funny, weird, experimental, and most of all – organic.

Over 20 million people have seen Jarrod’s popular Action Figure Therapy characters and most recently the series was named LA Weekly’s “Top Comic To Watch in 2012.” His character Jungle was also featured on the front page of the Huffington Post Comedy section in 2011. Jarrod has also been seen on TBS’ Lopez Tonight and Comedy Central’s Live at Gotham.

“Jarrod Harris’ act is an oddly comfortable mix of trailer-park filth, comic angst, and hipster irony. While his style may fit into several categories along the comedy spectrum, his clever writing only fits into one: funny.” – Noah Gardenswartz – Creative Loafing

Ryan Singer is the rarest of breeds: a comic’s comic that electrifies mainstream audiences with material that is both uncompromising and unpretentious. His debut album HOW TO GET HIGH WITHOUT DRUGS was selected as a Top 10 Album of 2010 by Punchline Magazine (now Laughspin) and his sophomore release COMEDY WONDER TOWN debuted in the Top 20 on iTunes. Ryan was recently mentioned in Rolling Stone Magazine as a “Comic Who Should Be Big” and NY Magazine as a “Top 5 Comic to Watch.”

“Ryan Singer is one of my favorite comics to watch. He is bizarrely creative and hilarious. The real deal.” – Marc Maron
